The end of the link volume

For years, the SEO industry operated under a simple rule: links were the currency. The more backlinks you had, the higher your ranking—a system fundamentally based on the original concept of PageRank.

Today, that system is evolving to improve its key ranking function. Google's introduction of Multi-Vector Retrieval (MUVERA) marks another step in the ongoing shift toward Semantic SEO, where a link's context, relevance, and trustworthiness far outweigh its volume.

MUVERA represents the natural evolution of PageRank: from counting links to interpreting semantic relationships.

This isn't just a minor adjustment; it's a fundamental recontextualization of authority.

The MUVERA paradigm: Context over volume

MUVERA represents a qualitative leap in how Google processes and relates information.

Although the technical paper focuses on retrieval efficiency, the implications for link evaluation are clear: the algorithm can analyze multiple semantic vectors simultaneously, allowing a link to be interpreted not as an isolated signal, but as part of a broader relational context.

In practical terms, this translates into two evaluation axes:

  1. Thematic coherence: Does the linking site share semantic territory with the link's destination?
  2. Contextual intent: Does the link contribute genuine informational value within the narrative flow where it appears?

This paradigm shift makes tactics based on decontextualized volume—massive exchanges, forced insertions, link farms—more difficult because Google can more accurately detect when a link lacks semantic justification within its immediate environment.

It's not just about quantity versus quality. It's about vector relationships: how your entity connects with other entities in a knowledge graph where each link must make sense within its thematic ecosystem.

With MUVERA, Google is essentially saying:

"From now on, we care less about raw volume and more about context, relevance, and trust. So stop trying to abuse links to manipulate our opinion."

From hunting for guest articles to thought leadership

The rise of MUVERA and Semantic SEO directly impacts traditional link building tactics, especially guest posting.

  • What's declining: The days of writing generic guest posts and simply dropping in a link insertion are over. Tactics like parasitic SEO (leveraging high-authority domains) are also being decisively crushed by Google's focus on site reputation and trustworthiness. These methods used to offer quick wins, but are now considered risky.
  • What's booming: Guest posting will retain its value, but only if executed as thought leadership. Publishing a well-written, expert article on a relevant niche blog where your link adds genuine value to that community is now the standard to follow.

Good SEO and good content remain the foundation, but the rules of the game have become stricter, prioritizing genuine contribution over simply acquiring links.

In practice: Before proposing or accepting a guest post, verify the actual thematic overlap between both sites.

If you need to force an explanation of why your content fits there, it probably doesn't.

Contextual relevance should be obvious, not argued.

The new signs of Authority: brand and trust

In this new era, the strongest signals of authority are often those that do not involve a traditional do-follow link.

1. The power of brand mentions without a link

A mention of your company on a highly credible site, such as a Chamber of Commerce, is now considered a powerful signal of trustworthiness, even if it doesn't include a link.

This is due to MUVERA's emphasis on trustworthiness over link juice (passed authority). If you have to choose between a brand mention without a link on a reputable site and a do-follow link from a low-quality blog, the brand mention is far more valuable.

This understanding drives the modern approach to Digital Public Relations (Digital PR). A brand mention not only builds reputation (acting as an endorsement of word-of-mouth marketing) but also serves as a powerful link-building tool, as other reputable sites are more likely to link to a brand mentioned by a major publication.

2. The strategic value of NoFollow links: beyond PageRank

The evolution of the rel="nofollow" attribute reflects the maturation of the web ecosystem itself. Introduced in 2005 as an anti-spam mechanism, its function has transcended the mere transmission or blocking of link authority.

Technical context: directive vs. signal

Since March 2020, Google has treated nofollow, ugc, and sponsored as hints rather than absolute directives. This means that while Google may choose not to follow the link for crawling or not count it for ranking, it retains contextual information about its existence and location.

But here's the key point that many overlook: nofollow is a Google-specific directive. Other agents—Bing, Yandex, academic crawlers, research bots, SEO tools, web archivers—are not obligated to respect it.

For them, a nofollow link remains a valid HTTP pointer that allows:

  1. Resource discovery: Crawlers continue to follow these links to map the web.
  2. Relational graph construction: Network analysis systems continue to compute these connections.
  3. Indexing in alternative search engines: Bing and others may value these links differently.
  4. Knowledge base enrichment: Academic crawlers, Common Crawl, Internet Archive… all follow these links.

Semantic value of the editorial context

From a semantic SEO perspective, a nofollow link in a high-quality editorial environment provides rich contextual signals:

  • Co-occurrence of entities: Your brand is mentioned alongside relevant entities in your industry.
  • Semantic territory validation: The surrounding textual context reinforces your thematic positioning.
  • Indirect trust signal: If reputable media outlets cite you (even with a nofollow link), other sites may consider you a reliable source.

Practical example: A nofollow mention in The New York Times or Der Spiegel generates:

  • Qualified referral traffic
  • Increased brand searches (indirect signal to Google)
  • Probability of subsequent mentions (with or without a link)
  • Strengthening of your organization's presence in the Knowledge Graph through co-citation

Evidence of measurable impact

Several correlation studies (Ahrefs 2021, SEMrush 2022, Moz 2023) show that pages with mixed link profiles (DoFollow + NoFollow from diverse sources) tend to rank better than those with only low-quality DoFollow links.

Although correlation does not imply causation, the most plausible interpretation is that the natural diversity of link types signals an organic profile, while 100% DoFollow profiles from directories or PBNs trigger manipulation filters (in other words, penalties).

Strategic application

In practice, this means:

  • Prioritize context over attributes: An editorial nofollow in TechCrunch is worth more than a dofollow in an abandoned blog from 2015.
  • Leverage social media platforms and UGC: Reddit, Quora, Medium… generate nofollows but create entry points for discovery and traffic.
  • Don't reject PR opportunities because of nofollows: Mentions in quality media build brand authority regardless of the attribute.
  • Think in citation graphs: Every contextualized mention (linked or not) strengthens your position in the entity graph.

Technical perspective: RDF and facilitating resource discovery

From a semantic web perspective, a NoFollow link is still a valid rdfs:seeAlso or dcterms:references. Systems that build knowledge graphs (DBpedia, Wikidata, OpenCyc) don't distinguish between robots.txt attributes; what matters is the semantic relationship expressed between two web resources.

If your strategy includes semantic descriptors (RDF/XML, JSON-LD) that explicitly define relationships between entities, a NoFollow link from a site that also uses structured markup can be interpreted by third-party systems as a formal relationship declaration between two knowledge graphs.

This perspective is supported by public statements from Google and by patterns observed in the algorithm's evolution.

3. Niche communities and academic/governmental sources

Current high-power linking strategies focus on contextual relevance found in niche and authoritative environments:

  • Community forums (e.g., Reddit): Google's recent integration underscores the value of authentic, community-driven discussions. Getting mentioned or linked to in a relevant, high-traffic thread is a major achievement for contextual authority.
  • Academic and government citations: Links from .edu and .gov sites align perfectly with Google's E-A-T (Expertise, Authority, Trustworthiness) framework and carry more weight, provided they are obtained naturally and not from compromised sites. Adding the second "E" (Expertise) comes down to content and external signals such as relevant reviews in context and success stories, to name a few.

This will change over time, as we've already seen with so many other platforms that Google has co-opted for its own purposes, and which, as time has passed, have faded from SEO rumors and literature. They may become established classics that continue more discreetly, like Quora, or disappear from the SEO ecosystem altogether, as happened with the Open Directory Project (closed in 2017), which was once a key reference for link building.

In contrast, moderate and "encyclopedic" platforms, such as Wikipedia, survive without fear in the turbulent waters of the generative search revolution.

Predictions that backlinks are "dying" have been around for over a decade, but they remain a key factor. Five years from now, we'll still be talking about them, but the conversation will have fundamentally changed:

  • In five years, we'll probably still be using the term "backlink" out of linguistic inertia, but we'll be talking about something else entirely: documentary relationships that can be interpreted by AI systems.
  • It's not that links will disappear, but rather that we'll stop treating them as voting units and start designing them as nodes within specialized knowledge graphs.
  • The SEO consultant of the future needs to think less like a link builder and more like a semantic information architect: someone who designs digital presences where the contextual relationships between content can be interpreted by machines without losing value for humans.
